Description
Matt Garrison is an American solo jazz bassist, known for his technical gift amongst jazz musicians. To create his music, his usual bass is single cut 5-string not with a low B-string, but with a high C on top. He prefers 33″ scale length, 26-frets, and having a ramp between the two pickups for his multi-finger style playing. According to bass maker Adamovic, “A singlecut design has a shorter neck that can move and vibrate with the string vibration. Therefore it absorbs different frequencies. This results in a quicker and more direct sound and improved articulation with piano like voicing.” This particular 2008 Fodera Matt Garrison Elite 5 borrows the Imperial single cut design and 33″ scale, but with the typical low B-string instead of Matt’s high C-string. 24 frets instead of 26. It isn’t equipped with a finger ramp either. It features buckeye top, matching headstock top, a walnut body, 5-piece maple/mahogany neck, neck-through construction, and rosewood fingerboard. Perhaps due to the single cut design, the bass resonates well and rich tones very suitable for chords on the higher registries. The B-string remains tight even though scale length is shorter than the typical 34″ scale bass; it is strung at the top tuning machine instead of the usual spot to increase tension, so the top left tuning peg is B, middle left is A, and lower left is E. It is worthwhile to mention that Fodera basses have a tone knob that works in both active and passive mode. We are not sure why this wiring is not adopted with more basses (Alleva Coppolo, Sadowsky, Roscoe, Le Fay, Freedom C.G.R. basses have this same feature, to our knowledge, and perhaps there are more out there), as it adds versatility to the tone by many miles. Many other basses have passive mode without a tone control; and for those that does have a tone control knob, it doesn’t work in active mode. We understand that treble-cut can be regarded as tone roll off, but really, it’s not the same. This bass is used and is in Excellent+ condition. It has a satin finish and looks gorgeous. There are few minor nicks and cleaning scratches, but not noticeable unless examined closely. Frets are tall, at 80-90% remaining. Black bridge is showing some brass around the corners, but nothing significantly aged. Truss rod works in both directions, and the electronics work flawlessly. The bass comes with its original teardrop hardcore. All specifications are listed in the Additional Information tab above.
