Description
The Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 is the company’s flagship model – the first guitar that Paul brought to Winter NAMM in 1985 and still among PRS’ best-selling instruments. The Custom 24’s beautifully carved maple top comes in a range of finishes, from three-dimensional “10 Tops” to more understated, subtle flame and back again. This top is paired a mahogany back, mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard, creating a truly balanced sound. The neck can come with one of a couple different shapes to suit most any player, from Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers to modern shredders like Mark Holcomb of Periphery. More recent Custom 24s come with the PRS-designed 85/15 bridge and neck pickups and five-way switching with coil-tapping, producing a bewildering amount of tones that have made these guitars the go-to favorites of touring artists and studio guitarists for more than three decades.
This Custom 24 is a 10 top. To make “10-Top” status, a PRS top must have clearly defined figure across its entire top. A guitar designated as a “10-Top” will have a small “10” written on the back of the headstock in the upper right corner. Some of our earlier guitars have the “10” stamped into the finish in the same position, and guitars with rosewood necks will have the “10” stamped into the back of the headstock.
Like most traditional PRS Custom models, it features a Mahogany body with a Carved Flamed Maple Top and a Rosewood fingerboard. The tonal characteristics of Mahogany are warm and somewhat soft, with a good balance and attractive grain. It typically produces a deep, rich tone and full, not tight, low end. Combining a Maple top with a Mahogany back can showcase the best tonal qualities of both woods. Mahogany offers a thick, warm, and resonant sound, while Maple contributes smooth, captivating lows with good sustain and some clarity in conjunction with the tonal qualities of Maple.
This is guitar is used in Good condition. There are many wears indicating plenty of use, such as numerous nicks and knocks around the edges of the body and headstock, numerous scratches on the back, and a few nicks on the body top. There are also paint wear on the back of the neck. The wears don’t seem to intrude much with playing. The guitar is structurally sound; the neck has no issue, fingerboard is smooth, and truss rod works well in both directions. Frets are about 70% tall. So, overall playability is very good. The guitar comes with its original case.
