Description
Apart from legendary guitar models such as the Les Paul and SG, Gibson is also active in the bass category. The most famous bass model that Gibson produces is the Thunderbird, which is what we have in stock here at Bella Romeo. The Thunderbird has an offset body and neck-through-body design, which was first seen in 1963. Some people say the Thunderbird is not well balanced ergonomically (i.e. neck dive); we didn’t find this to be a particular problem with both sitting and standing. The infamous body shape oozes a rebellious attitude, and this bass wants to be played, hard.
This Thunderbird is the Bicentennial version produced in 1976. It features a mahogany body construction, which has a punchy and warm tone. It comes with a 20-fret rosewood fingerboard and a mahogany/walnut laminate neck, which the rosewood gives a rich and rounded tone and the neck has a rounded profile which provides fast and silky playing feel. For electronics, it is equipped with two T-Bird humbucker pickups in the neck and bridge position. Mahogany wing body, through structure mahogany neck/rosewood fingerboard.
Condition is rated Good. The original humbuckers pickups have been rewound at some point, the sound is very much Thunderbird, producing a fat sound centered on the low-mids provided by mahogany’s characteristics. There are no other replacement parts. Although there are numerous scratches and dents, it remains structurally solid. Gracefully aged, it has been. We have captured as many photos possible to document these wears. The neck condition is good, there are a few nicks and scratches you could feel, but not in a way that impact playability. There are about 60% of the frets remain, and the truss rod has room in both direction, so the play condition is good. It is now strung with a set of flat wound strings. Bridge cover, both pickup covers have gone amiss. This bass comes with an original deluxe hardshell case. All specifications are listed in the Additional Information tab above.
