Description
Verdine White is best known as one of the founding members of Earth, Wind and Fire. He is Rolling Stone’s top 50 bassist of all time, ranked 19th. Killer basslines. Verdine White’s signature bass with Sadowsky NYC is an awesome bass; here’s why. Sadowsky basses are known for their lightweight construction (among many other good things of course), and the satin series in which this signature is based on takes it to featherweight level. The lightest weight instrument in our inventory at the time of this writing is a Strandberg Boden 6 Headless GUITAR, measured at 2.3kg. This Sadowsky NYC Verdine White weighs 3.7kg, and it’s a slightly undersized, chambered Jazz-bass body with a proper headstock. It defies physics. Anyone can make a full size bass below 4kg of course, but Sadowsky managed to build it with sturdiness to withstand 5 bass strings’ tension, great ergonomics in terms of weight balance with only a slight hint of neck dive. And most important of all, it sounds absolutely amazing. In our view, the satin series represents great value for a top class bass. The bass is endowed with a chambered swamp ash body, maple neck and fingerboard. The nut width is narrow at 1.875″ typical for a 5-string JB, and the radius is quite flat for easy playing. It is equipped with the original Sadowsky P/J humcancelling pickups, and Sadowsky preamp with 2-band boost-only EQ and a tone control knob that also acts as a push/pull for active/passive modes. We want to note that the treble and bass EQs frequencies are tastefully selected, and the boost is really punchy when pushed to the max.
It is worthwhile to mention that Sadowsky basses have a tone knob that works in both active and passive mode. We are not sure why this wiring is not adopted with more basses (Alleva Coppolo, Fodera, Roscoe, Le Fay, Freedom C.G.R. basses have this same feature, to our knowledge, and perhaps there are more out there), as it adds versatility to the tone by many miles. Many other basses have passive mode without a tone control; and for those that does have a tone control knob, it doesn’t work in active mode. We understand that treble-cut can be regarded as tone roll off, but really, it’s not the same.
This bass is used and is in Mint- condition. The satin finish is smooth as is the nitro finish on the neck. Very light hint of shininess on the satin finish in some area, but insignificant. There is no obvious nicks or scratches anywhere. Over time, with regular playing i.e. rubbing, the satin finish will become more shiny, so it’s something to note in terms of how we think this bass will look through the years. You will play it often. It’s irresistible. Currently the bass is strung with Dunlop Marcus Miller stainless steels, providing a good snappy high end tone. The frets are tall at 90%, and the truss rod works both directions with good margin.
